History of Kwara State

Kwara State was created on 27th May, 1967 along with other 11 states that were originally called West Central States that was carved out of the Defunct Northern Niger. After the 1976 boundary adjustment and 1991 Local Government Areas excision and creation of states, the Kwara State landmass was reduced to 34,804.72 Sq.

Presently, Kwara state occupied a vantage position on the map of Nigeria. It lies midway between the Northern and Southern parts of Nigeria. It is bounded in the Northern part by Niger state and share international boundary with the republic of Benin. To its Eastern part is Kogi State while its Southern part is shared with Ondo, Osun and Oyo States.

Added to this vantage position is availability of abundant natural resources and high caliber of Human resources.

The State capital, Ilorin, was founded by the Yoruba during the 15th century as a military command center for the old Oyo Empire. In the early 1800s, Ilorin was incorporated into the Fulani Emirate of Sokoto until the arrival of British in 1897.

The today’s Kwara is populated by more than 2.5 millions people that constituted by the following indigenous and non-indigenous tribes:- Yoruba, Fulani, Nupe, Baruba, Igbo, Hausa and Others.

Its climate condition and vegetation is naturally favoured both for Habitants and Agricultural Developments. And, according to the climate calendar, the wet and dry seasons are between April-October and October-March respectively.

For proper administration and adequately development of the Kwara State, it was divided into 16 Local Government Areas and 193 Wards.

Unlike other States of the federation, Kwara state is abundantly riched with various Non-oil mineral resources and Agricultural produces.
